The Carolina Panthers kick off training camp today and for the first time in a couple of years it might be one of the most important camps yet. The Panthers find themselves currently in a “youth movement” and this camp will help decide a lot of what young guys will play where. As the practices get underway today let’s take a quick look at the most important headlines going in.

At the quarterback position it will be the first time in seven years that Jake Delhomme will not be the starter heading into camp. Matt Moore is now the guy and it is his team to take over and provide leadership too. Delhomme was known for his leadership so it will be huge for Moore to take a bigger role as a leader on and off the field. Moore is 6-2 as an NFL starter and is the only quarterback on the roster that has taken snaps in an NFL regular season game. The other three guys in Hunter Cantwell, Jimmy Clausen, and Tony Pike all have a lot of potential but it will be up to Moore to bring the experience factor. Look for Moore to use training camp to find his groove as a starter and really connect with the first team offense.

The other thing to watch at camp this year is the injury factor. Staying healthy is more important than ever for the Panthers as their depth is not as strong as in the past. The starters have a solid unit but beyond that the backup and third units are fairly thin. Linebacker Thomas Davis is already out most likely for the season with a torn ACL and wide receiver Steve Smith will miss all of training camp and most of preseason with a broken arm. Also positions like the defensive and offensive line will also be places to watch as each line tries to find an identity.  So Carolina will have no room for any more serious injuries at camp before heading into the season.
