So the first morning practice of the Carolina Panthers training camp is in the book and it had a few interesting moments to say the least. The team went full pads right out of the gate and it was good to get that first look at what the players look like on the field. So let’s just take a quick look at some things that happened during the morning practice.
The number one thing that stuck out to everybody watching practice was wide receiver Dwayne Jarrett. Jarrett who is in probably the most critical stage of his career is looking to solidify that number two receiver spot with a good camp, but his first impression this morning was not a good one. From running the wrong routes, to not coming up with balls, to coming up limping like he was injured, it was just an overall terrible first practice for Jarrett. Meanwhile his counterpart Kenny Moore was impressive in his first practice and was also praised for his blocking on run plays. Jarrett is not even close to being guaranteed a spot on this team and if he wants to make an impact he needs to show that he can get the job done.
As for the quarterback spot, Moore had his first training camp practice as the starting quarterback for the Panthers and for the most part everything went smooth. Newly signed rookie Jimmy Clausen was also out on the field and for the first practice was working with the third team. It will be interesting to see how all of these quarterbacks progress during camp.
On the defensive side of the ball linebacker Jon Beason got some work in shifting to the weakside and seemed to be fitting in nicely breaking up a number of passes. Beason really looked comfortable and looks ready to go for this upcoming season. As for minor injuries the Panthers had a few today but nothing serious. Defensive end Charles Johnson and linebacker Jamar Williams both had to leave practice for minor tweaks but head coach John Fox did not update their condition.
All in all it was good to see the team back on the field and they will be back out there later for the evening practice. We will have more updates after the late practice plus an in depth look at rookie receiver Armanti Edwards. We will take a look at what his role will be with the Panthers this season and also what the former Appalachian State quarterback brings to the field. Really wish Dwayne Jarrett would get his act together. If he doesn't step up they need to cut him.
